Longhorns swim to yet another Conference Title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 1 Texas swept the seven men's swimming and diving events to put the finishing touches on its 31st consecutive conference title Saturday evening at the 2010 Big 12 Championships.

The Longhorns captured their 14th Big 12 Conference championship with 1,086 points, and Texas A&M took second with 826 points. Missouri placed third with 740 points. Senior Ricky Berens was selected as the Big 12 Men's Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet, and sophomore Drew Livingston was the Co-Men's Outstanding Diver of the Meet. Freshman Austin Surhoff was named the Big 12 Men's Newcomer of the Meet. UT diving coach Matt Scoggin was tabbed the Big 12 Co-Men's Diving Coach of the Meet.

Junior diver Matt Cooper started off the night for Texas with a win in the platform diving event, where he took top honors with 434.60 points. Freshman Austin Surhoff notched his second win of the week and third top-two finish overall, as he claimed the 200-yard backstroke with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:41.72 and became the sixth-fastest Longhorn in the event. Sophomore Hayes Johnson took third in 1:42.97, and junior Bryan Collins placed fourth in 1:43.28. Freshman Cole Cragin claimed the consolation final in 1:45.26 Sophomore Jimmy Feigen led a Texas triumvirate atop the 100 freestyle, where he was victorious with a NCAA "B" cut of 42.63. Senior Dave Walters took second in 43.22, and junior Scott Jostes placed third in 43.25. Senior Peter Jameson placed fifth in 43.90, and senior Ben Van Roekel took sixth in 44.21. Freshman Dax Hill claimed the consolation final in 44.17.

Sophomore Jackson Wilcox captured his second Big 12 1,650 freestyle crown in as many seasons with a winning NCAA "B" cut of 14:55.96. Junior Jim Robertson placed third at 15:16.40.

Sophomore Eric Friedland set a new meet record on his way to victory in the 200 breaststroke, as he was victorious with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:54.32, the fastest time in college swimming thus far. The mark broke the previous meet record of 1:54.41 set last season by Texas' Agustin Magruder. Freshman Nick D'Innocenzo placed second in 1:54.32, and junior Scott Spann took fourth in 1:59.48. Sophomore Matt Hoyland won the consolation final with a mark of 1:57.97.

Senior Ricky Berens broke his own meet record of 1:43.25 in the 200 butterfly with a winning time of 1:43.17 in Saturday's finals. Senior Hill Taylor placed second with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:45.27, and freshman Madison Gibson placed fourth in 1:49.43. Junior Brian Wilson took fifth in 1:49.77.

Texas capped the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay. Walters, Berens, Jameson and Feigen finished with a NCAA "B" cut of 2:52.77.
